Sri Mulyani Indrawati (born in Tanjungkarang, Lampung, 26 August 1962) is an Indonesian economist. She was once acted as Head of Society and Economy Investigation Board (Lembaga Penyelidikan Ekonomi dan Masyarakat Fakultas Ekonomi Universitas Indonesia [LPEM- FEUI]) since June 1998. Later, she was appointed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to occupy the position of State Minister for National Development Planning/Chairman of the National Development Planning Board.
In 5 December 2005, Sri Mulyani was appointed as the Minister of Finance replacing Jusuf Anwar, when the President declares the reshuffling of cabinet. She introduced what she called a four-step bureaucratic reform program: organizational improvement, business process improvement, human resources development and a new renumeration package. The program is aimed at the application principles of good governance, increasing the level of services by reducing corrupt practices, and gradual improvement in state budgetary performance and management of the capital markets.
Prior the appointment as the State Minister for National Development Planning/Chairman of the National Development Planning Board, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America, as a consultant in USAID since August 2001 in order to strengthen rural institution by providing master degree scholarship for several faculty members in the region. During that period, she provided numbers of suggestion and idea concerning the method to design master degree program for university in region and any other USAID program in Indonesia, particularly under the ambit of economic field. Despite that, she also taught Indonesian economics and macroeconomy in Georgia University, including numerous research and writing.
Sri Mulyani Indrawati or commonly called as “Mbak Ani”, is an economist who use to present in seminars and press. As a lecturer in Faculty of Economy, University of Indonesia, she was once acting as the government advisor together with several other notable economists in Dewan Ekonomi Nasional (National Economy Board) during the era of Abdurrahman Wahid presidency. As in Indonesia, she has been involved in numerous seminars during her stay in the States, however, concentrating in international problem rather than in Indonesia.
In the beginning of October 2002, Sri Mulyani was elected as the Executive Director of International Monetary Fund representing 12 nations in South East Asia (SEA Group). Her duty as Executive Director is primarily deals with decision making process. In order to define numerous program and decision that shall be taken by IMF. Thus, she was not merely representing Indonesia, but, state parties in IMF and any other related international forum.
In 2008, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, has been dubbed the 23rd Most Influential Woman in the World, by the renowned Forbes magazine. This position also put her in number three in the list of Asian's most powerful people. She follows Singapore's Temasek Holdings executive director, Ho Ching, who is in number 8, and Indian National Congress (INC) Party president, Sonia Gandhi, in number 21.
However, Sri Mulyani defeated Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Prize winner who is currently under home arrest by order of Burma's military regime. Suu Kyi is placed in number 38 on the list. The survey is based on career, economical impact, and frequency of reporting in the media. In the same year, Sri Mulyani was awarded Asian Finance of The Year 2008 by Emerging Market Asia magazine. Finally, EuroMoney magazine also granted her an award as Finance Minister of the Year and Minister Contribution To Finance Award 2008.
