The Corporate Planning Chief of PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMI), Irwan Priantoko, is one of Indonesia’s automotive industry leaders who have lobbied the government to hasten the building process of a port built specifically to cater the automotive industry in East Ancol. According to Priantoko, the specialized port has fast become a necessity amidst the changing dynamics of the global automotive trade, including security and port facility issues. Priantoko added that a specialized port will provide incentives for investors in the automotive industry, as the services made available by the port will allow them to cut costs. As a representative of the automotive industry lobby, Priantoko stressed that industry movers and shakers both within and outside Indonesia are concerned that the current ports available to them are not representative of their wishes: the current flaws they are objecting to may seem small, from stolen rear-view mirrors to minor damage to merchandise due to an environment that has not been sterilized, but such minor issues are multiplied by the amount of demand for vehicles in the Indonesia, and the cost to investors add up. The chairman of the Indonesian Motor Vehicle Importers Association, Budhiman Sirodj, stated that he feels a specialized port ought to offer much in the way of improved efficiency. [aws]
