The Transportation Ministry offers the construction projects of two railways in Batam worth IDR2.4 trillion to private sector.
Those two railways will connect Hang Nadim Airport with Batu Ampar and Batam Center with Tanjung Ucang, Director General of Railways at Transportation Ministry Tundjung Inderawan said.
“The government realizes the construction of railway facilities will require large budget. Therefore, it will support the involvement of community, local government, and private company,” he said yesterday.
Based on the Law No.23/2007 on Railways, the government provides opportunity for private company to build and operate railways.
The ministry has inserted the railways project in Batam into the 2009 Railways Master Plan, which has three corridors with total length of 60 km.
Those three corridors are the 27.55 km Batu Ampar-Batu Aji, 16.48 km Sekupang-Batam Center, and 16.36 km Batam Center-Nongsa.
As planned, the ministry will put priority on two corridors namely the 19.6 km Hang Nadim Airport-Batu Ampar and the 17.7 km Batam Center-Tanjung Uncang.
“The two corridors are congested lanes since it connects economic centers with Hang Nadim Airport as the entrance,” he said.
As the initial phase, the ministry signed an agreement with Batam Commercial Agency (BP Batam) on January 27th.
Both parties agreed to form task force to prepare for the implementation of the railways in Batam Island, including setting up human resources and institution.
The Batam Center-Batu Aji-Tanjung Uncang railways will be equipped with 13 stations, i.e. Batam Center, Perumnas, Batu Aji, Sagulung, Aviari, Putri Hijau, Tembesi, Muka Kuning (Main Station), Batamindo, Panbil, Kara, Politeknik, and Damri.
