Government to Open Money Laundry Investigation for Other Agency

More Indonesian law enforcement agency expected to be able to probe into money laundering cases in addition to the corrupt National Police, as the bill was listed on the house's 2010 - 2014 legislation plan, in the wake of police failure to maintain a clean special economic directorate in its force.

The plan is to add the Corruption Eradication Comission into the field which had been dedicated fully, under the current law, to the corrupt police force. Head of of the National Law Management of the Law and Human Rights Department Ahamd Ramli said in anterview last week "If approved by the house, the Corruption Eradication Commission will be authorized to probe money laundry beside graft cases."

A note of impacts on the lack of authority hold by the anti-graft body is its inablity to enter the Century bail out case where indications of graft had not been detected although money laundry crime has been detected.

Another state institution which was established to run financial monitoring function the Financial Transaction Report and Analysis Center (PPATK), had initially proposed to have the authority on the money laundry crime as well but the Law Departmnet said the monitoring agency was not included in the deliberation.

The agency, which data were used as the base of investigation of tax scam and police dubious assets, according to the law department will not see its authority expanded including on the ability to suspend or block a bank accounts under its surveillance.

The latest tax scam involving major local and multinational firms including three Bakrie & Brothers companies; Bumi resources, Kaltim Prima Coal, and Arutmin proves the National Police's inability to run a clean special economic directrate as all the two officers implicated and four higher ranking ones mentioned but escaped prosecution are frm the special economic directorate.
