Indonesia now has approximately 180 million cellular phone subscribers, or 80 percent of the population, Cellular Phone Providers Association (ATSI) chairman Sarwoto Atmosutarno said Wednesday.
“Less than 5 percent of the nation’s households have landlines. However, over the past 15 years, cellular phones services have reached 80 percent of the population”, Sawoto said.
Sarwoto, who is also president director of cellular giant Telkomsel, said the rapid growth of the cellular phone industry had benefited developing countries like Indonesia, India, and African countries.
“Last year, the Indonesian industry earned more than Rp 100 trillion in revenue. All 10 in-country operators have collectively built 100,000 base transceiver stations nationwide. This year, the industry has prepared a total of US$2 billion in new investment,” Sarwoto said as quoted by kompas.com.
To avoid potential saturation in the cellular business, Sarwoto suggested the industry further develop its broadband capacity, currently used by 30 million consumers.
The Indonesian Cellular Show 2010, held at the Jakarta Convention Center, will last until Sunday.
