Local Content Made Absolute Requirement WiMax Vendors Ready to Supply Equipment

Local content is made the main requirement in the operational feasibility test of nomadic WiMax service.

On the other hand, 4G telecommunication equipment vendors state they will be ready to operate at sufficient capacity.

Director General of Post and Telecommunication M. Budi Setiawan asserted the government made local content an absolute requirement in the operational feasibility test of WiMax 16.d on 2.3 GHz.

He promised to make the test administrative process easier as long as the local content requirement was fulfilled.

Director of PT Teknologi Riset Global Gatot Tetuko revealed local vendors could step up partnerships with foreign vendors to meet the local content requirement, which is fixed at 30% for customer premise equipment (CPE) and 40% for BTS.

WiMax 16.d equipment on 2.3 GHz that has fulfilled the local content requirement is the one made by TRG, a company under the Indonesia Tower group that establishes a partnership with Canada's TranzeoWireless Technologies Incorporation.

Gatot promised the company would be ready to produce up to 5,000 units of CPEs per month and 200 units of base stations per month. The supply will be produced by the plant in Batam.

He explained TRG right now was ready to operate three CPE and BTS production lines, which could be implemented in accord with market need and demand.

WiMax Interconnection
President Director of Sitra WiMax 4G Kumaran Singaram disclosed to meet the local content requirement Sitra would ask for supply from TRG for Jabodetabek area.

"So, in addition to employ local professionals, we also open opportunities for the local manufacturing industries. We consider TRG able to produce equipment for 2.3 GHz frequency."

Singaram added since the Wi-Max 16.d service had nomadic license, it was not able to browse data with other operators' service.
The case would be different if the technology was elevated to mobile WiMax. If this happened, Sitra would consider the need to establish partnerships with other operators.

He explained the WiMax 16.d on 2.3 GHz frequency service would eye subscribers not connected with optic cable due to limited infrastructures, new Internet subscribers, and subscribers switching from low-quality services.

With the existing requirement, the nomadic WiMax service can cover thousands of subscribers within a radius of 2 kilometer-3 kilometer unlimitedly to all areas. (Bisnis/roy)
